You open Honista and everything looks fine — until you realise you missed a DM, a like, or a comment hours ago. No buzz, no badge, nothing. It is one of the most annoying Honista problems because the app itself seems to work perfectly.

The good news: in most cases the cause is a setting, not the app. Work through these fixes in order — cheapest first. Most people are fixed by step 2 or 3.

Quick Answer

If Honista notifications are not working, first check the notification switches inside Honista (Profile > Settings > Notifications), then check your phone’s notification permission for Honista, then turn off battery optimization for the app. Those three steps fix the problem for most users.

Fix 1 — Check Notification Settings Inside Honista

This is the most common cause, and the easiest to miss. Honista has its own notification switches, separate from your phone’s settings.

  1. Open Honista and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap the menu (three lines) and open Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Make sure Pause All is turned off.
  5. Check the categories one by one — Posts, Stories, Comments, Followers, Messages, Calls, Live Videos — and turn on the ones you want.

If only one type of notification is missing — for example you get DMs but not likes — this is almost certainly the cause. A single category was switched off.

Fix 2 — Allow Notifications in Your Phone Settings

Even with Honista’s own switches on, Android can still block the app at system level — especially after an update or a fresh install, when the permission prompt was dismissed by accident.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.
  2. Go to Apps and find Honista.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Make sure Allow notifications (or Show notifications) is turned on.
  5. If your phone lists notification categories, check that none of the ones you want are silenced.

On Samsung phones the path is Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Honista. On Xiaomi/Redmi it is Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Honista > Notifications.

Fix 3 — Turn Off Battery Optimization for Honista

This is the fix most guides miss — and the one that matters most for a sideloaded app like Honista.

Android’s battery optimization puts apps you have not opened recently to sleep. When Honista is asleep in the background, it cannot check for new activity, so notifications arrive late or not at all. The problem is worse on Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo phones, which add their own aggressive battery savers on top of Android’s.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Honista > Battery.
  3. Select Unrestricted (on some phones: “Don’t optimize” or “Allow background activity”).
  4. On Xiaomi/Redmi, also open Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Honista and turn on Autostart.
  5. On Samsung, check Settings > Battery > Background usage limits and make sure Honista is not in the “Sleeping apps” or “Deep sleeping apps” list.

Restart your phone after this change so the new setting takes effect cleanly.

Fix 4 — Turn Off Do Not Disturb and Battery Saver

Check the simple things before assuming the app is broken:

  • Do Not Disturb silences notifications without any visible warning. Swipe down from the top of your screen and check it is off — or check whether it is scheduled to turn on at certain hours.
  • Battery Saver / Power Saving mode restricts background activity, including notifications. Turn it off and see whether notifications return.
  • Data Saver can also delay notifications when you are on mobile data. If notifications only fail on mobile data but work on Wi-Fi, check Settings > Network > Data Saver.

Fix 5 — Clear Honista’s Cache (Do Not Clear Data Yet)

Corrupted temporary files can stop notifications without affecting anything else in the app.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Honista > Storage.
  2. Tap Clear cache.
  3. Restart Honista.

Clearing cache does not log you out and does not delete your settings. Do not tap “Clear data” — that logs you out and wipes your Honista settings. If you ever need to reinstall, back up your settings first: see our guide on how to back up Honista settings.

Fix 6 — Update or Reinstall Honista

If nothing above worked, the build itself may be the problem. Older Honista builds can lose notification delivery after Instagram changes something on its servers — the same backend changes that broke media downloads in v12.1.

  1. Check which version you have: Honista > Profile > Settings > About.
  2. If you are not on v13.0, update to the latest version — see how to update Honista.
  3. If you are already on v13.0, uninstall and reinstall the same version. Back up your settings first (see Fix 5).

One honest note: no version of Honista can guarantee notifications. It is a modified client, and Instagram can change how its servers talk to third-party apps at any time. If notifications stop working right after an Instagram-side change, the fix may have to wait for the next Honista update.

Still Not Working?

Run through this checklist once more: in-app notification switches on, phone permission allowed, battery optimization off (including your phone brand’s own battery saver), Do Not Disturb off, cache cleared, v13.0 installed. If all six are correct and notifications still do not arrive, wait 24 hours — a temporary Instagram-side issue usually clears on its own. If it does not, the Honista troubleshooting hub covers the other common problems, and our not-working guide covers crashes and login errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why am I not getting Honista notifications but the app works fine?
A: Almost always a setting: notification switches inside Honista, the phone’s notification permission, or battery optimization putting Honista to sleep in the background. Fix 1, 2, and 3 above cover all three.

Q: Why do Honista notifications arrive late?
A: Late notifications are the classic sign of battery optimization. Android — or your phone brand’s own battery saver — is delaying Honista’s background activity. Turn off battery optimization for Honista (Fix 3) and check Samsung’s sleeping-apps list or Xiaomi’s autostart setting.

Q: Do I need to reinstall Honista to fix notifications?
A: No, not usually. Try Fixes 1–5 first — reinstalling is the last step, and only after backing up your settings, because reinstalling wipes them.

Q: Will updating Honista fix missing notifications?
A: It can, if the cause is an old build that stopped working after an Instagram server change. Update to v13.0 first and test before reinstalling.

Q: Are Honista notifications safe to turn on?
A: Notifications themselves are safe — they only tell you about activity on your account. The account risks of using a modified client are separate; read our safety guide before signing in with your main account.
